A “Rich” Argument on Abortion

Ruth Bader Ginsburg has a reason why Roe v. Wade should not be overturned:

Atlanta, GA (LifeNews.com) — In a weekend speech, pro-abortion Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said that rich women will still be able to get abortions even if Roe v. Wade is reversed. She also said some women will be able to travel to others states where abortion would likely remain legal.
Ginsburg spoke to an audience at Atlanta’s Ahavath Achim synagogue and said that Roe v. Wade has been around long enough that there will always be some access to legalized abortion in the United States.

She likened the landmark abortion decision to divorce laws around the country and, if Roes goes, the high court justice said some states will still allow abortions while others limit or prohibit it.

“I do not believe the court’s overruling Roe v. Wade — which I don’t think will happen — will prevent women of means from accessing an abortion,” she said, according to an Associated Press report.

But should the Supreme Court ever reverse the decision, “It will have a devastating impact on poor women,” she claimed.

It’s these type of arguments from the pro-abortion side that undermine even our ability to have law. Would well-to-do women who really determine to abort be able to fly to a state where it was legal or out of the country? Sure. Of course, the fact of that matter is that well-to-do individuals can fly to China and for the right price obtain organs that were involuntarily taken from prisoners. It doesn’t mean we should legalize the practice here. There are places where people can more easily have sex with minors due to lax enforcement and human trafficking. Here in our own country, prostitution is illegal in most places, but all it takes is a quick flight into Vegas or Reno and you’re within driving distance of legal brothels.

So, yes, rich people do find ways to break the law, but using it as an argument against having laws undermines our society and makes us subject to the rule of the lawless. In addition, I would dispute how many women would actually pursue an abortion should their state ban it. When there are less abortion clinics in a state, the number of abortions decline even though people who are not so rich can afford a trip to another part of the state on a Greyhound bus.

And of course, abortion itself hurts women whether richer or poor, but that’s not something Justice Ginsburg will tell you.
