Rank and file Republicans endorsed closed primaries this morning, saying they didn’t want Democrats voting in GOP primary races.
The first step in a long process comes in the first full day of the at the party’s biannual state convention in Idaho Falls.
Pushed by Ada County conservative Rod Beck, a former senator who has lost Republican primaries to more moderate opponents, the proposal passed two of the key committees sorting out the party’s stances this weekend.
“Would you like the coach to choose the starting lineup of the opponent?” Beck asked the members of the rules committee.
A clear majority passed the idea in a voice vote soon after, and a close 21-19 spread in the platform committee endorsed the idea there.
Spot on and we need to close this. Too much tomfoolery goes on around election day. Its so bad, I’d use a word like tomfoolery. As someone who didn’t lose his election do to cross-over voters, I still support the closing of the primaries. Now, its going to take implementing party registration, and its also going to be vitally important that this go from being the idea of the Republican State Convention and become state policy. Unfortunately, some Republican Legilslators have not shown much esteem for our platform issues in years past.
