An Act of Love

Seeing what large chunks of unearned wealth did to Paris Hilton has led her grandfather to make a decision:

“He was, and is, extremely embarrassed by how the Hilton name has been sullied by Paris,” says Jerry Oppenheimer, who wrote a biography of the clan called House Of Hilton. “He now doesn’t want to leave unearned wealth to his family.”

The money will go to the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, the charity set up in the name of the founder of the family business.

There’s some wisdom in this, and I heard a few years back that Bill Gates is leaving a minimal amount to each of his children (enough to give them a headstart in life, but not enough that they can just rest on Daddy’s money.) and the rest to charity. While I’m not certain if the Conrad Hilton Foundation will properly handle the fortune (In fact, I’m certain they won’t) , simply flushing the money down the toilet’s not an option. So, hopefully in a generation or so, members of the Hilton family will no longer be spoiled and rediscover the value of hard work which enabled Conrad Hilton to build an empire.
