And Behold It is…Silver Age Comics Goodness
Posted by Adam Graham in : Good NewsI read with some interest, this report that Marvel is putting many of its archives online. (Hat Tip: Outside the Beltway.)
The site looks promising, and I’d love to get some time to really get into this. With my own fiction, I think it’s important to understand how these books became so appealing to a mass audience before the comic world took it’s far darker turn in recent years. Of course, there are plenty of modern titles offered, thus the one flaw with the product.

It looks like they plan to make the whole Marvel archive available for $4.95 a month. Not a bad deal — I hope DC follows suit.

I hope DC does as well. I have to admit the one Marvel title I pulled up (one of their kid titles) was lame. (Spiderman Adventures.) To be kid frinedly apparently, poor animation, lame dialogue, and bad story telling are required. I don’t buy it. Spider Girl actually looks a lot more interesting, at least the first pages they made available for free. I pulled up a Silver Age Avengers’ comic and felt I’d been left out—on a lot.

Well, that’s inevitable — these comics have huge continuities, and it’s hard to keep up without knowing them, which is probably a reason for opening up these archives to begin with. These days young writers are talking about abandoning continuity altogether, and going for a “Simpsons” like arrangement where everyone can be killed but everything is back to normal at the next issue. I feel a middle way is possible, where stories can be episodic, but not structured so that you have to read every single issue of every single title put out in the DC or Marvel Universes to know what’s going on.
