Think about this.  Right now your neighbor who doesn’t have insurance and ends up in an emergency room without any way to pay is sticking you, the taxpayer, with the bill.  And the Idaho Legislature has drafted legislation that is all but assured of being signed into law protecting your neighbor’s ability to continue sticking you with the bill…the Idaho Legislature has chosen to protect your neighbor’s right to be irresponsible and stick you with the bill.

Let’s think about this for a minute. There’s a very simple formula here:

1. Your Neighbor is being irresponsible
2. You could end up paying for it.
3. Therefore, you can use the government to force your neighbor to do the responsible thing.

How far does this extend?

Certainly, not just health insurance. Lots of irresponsible people don’t have  life insurance and when they die, their orphans and spouses end up dependent on the state. Everyone, therefore, should be required to buy sufficient life insurance or pay a fine.

Same thing goes for long term care insurance. A large number of people who end up needing long term care go through all of their assets until they have only $2000 in assets left at which point, Medicaid pays for it. Therefore, people should be required to buy long-term care insurance or pay a fine.

In addition, many elderly people who end up on government assistance are there because they didn’t put enough money aside for retirement or invested in investments that were so conservative they didn’t keep up with inflation. Therefore, people should be required to invest a portion of their income for retirement and be required to take on enough risk to realize a return, or pay a fine.

In additional, the general savings rate is low. Therefore everyone should be required to put their a portion of their money in a government run savings account where the government will decide what are appropriate covered reasons to withdraw money and what are not. And those who don’t pay a fine.

In addition, consider the cost of children born out of wedlock. It is irresponsible to have sex outside of marriage without an IUD, a condom, and taking birth control pills. Therefore, in the name of being responsible if you don’t buy and use these products, you could be subject to a fine.

In addition, have you seen poor people out eating at Golden Corral and McDonalds or buying the wrong foods at Wal-Mart. These folks are likely to have health problems that will require treatment. Paying the claims of those with insurance is going to mean increased rates for everyone. Therefore, those who don’t eat right should pay a fine.

Also, some people have already complained about large families burdening school district by having too many children. One women even suggested to the Governor that large families be required to pay a surtax for extra children.

That’s the ticket.

If we implemented these regulations,  we would be a much tidier society. People would have health insurance, long term care insurance, retirement, savings, and they would eat right. Or else.

The only thing it wouldn’t be is a free society.  Now Democrats may dispute this list as extreme and improbable. But I think all the things listed can be argued to be irresponsible behaviors. And all of them can be seen to cost taxpayers money.

Why must government stop with forcing us to buy health insurance when there are so many ways they can force us to be “responsible”? The right of government to force you to be responsible runs contrary to the right of people to be free. Instead, it is just the nanny state that tells you to behave like a dutiful child.

Sacramento, Calif. (AP) – Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s budget cuts could mean the closing of up to 220 state parks, among them the home of the world’s tallest tree and other attractions that draw millions of visitors.

Schwarzenegger this week recommended eliminating $70 million in parks spending through June 30, 2010. An additional $143.4 million would be saved in the following fiscal year by keeping the parks closed.

“This is a worst-case scenario,” said Roy Sterns, a spokesman at the state parks department. “If we can do less than this, we will try. But under the present proposal, this is it.”

You mean the first thing they cut wasn’t the prisons or the schools?  There’s something else to cut. Yes, plenty. Parks are great, but they are ultimately a luxury item that can be cut. And there are more where that came from.

My latest Pajamas Media piece is up and I have to say of all the pieces I’ve written, it is probably among those that I’m the most proud of:

I’ve taken time off from work on April 15 to be at my local tea party. As the tea parties occur, the media will offer their spin on why people are there.

Large events like this are remarkable. In some ways, they’re comparable to baseball games, where you’ll find some people with an agenda aside from the game. If the media applied the same coverage to baseball games that it applies to tea parties, it would assume that, if someone gets through security and streaks across the field nude, most of the crowd are closet nudists.

Of course, most just want to see the game and have no interest in the streaker. Similarly, the streaker has no interest in the baseball game. He simply wants to streak nude in front of a large audience.

Like our baseball streaker, some at the tea parties will have their own agendas that have little or nothing to do with the cause for which most people are going to attend. Most would rather not be defined by the proverbial streaker, and I’m no exception. I’m not going to the tea party to make the case that President Obama is a Muslim born in Indonesia, to advocate secession from the union, or to explain how America’s problems are the direct results of actions by members of the Council on Foreign Relations. I’m not going as a Republican; I’m going as an American.

My party has let the country down with its massive overspending, corrupt career politicians, and willingness to play business as usual when it’s not called for. As much as I’m not a fan of the Obama administration, if he’s replaced in 2012 by a feckless Republican president with a feckless Republican Congress that believes only its own re-election, our country will be no better for it.

I’ve thought about this in recent days with the $165 Million AIG bonuses. If anyone recalls, President Obama just six days ago signed a bill with $8 billion worth of earmarks-or nearly 50 AIG bonus payouts. The 9,000 wasteful earmarks were no big deal, even our own Mike DeVine said so though mostly for strategic reasons.

Yet, over the AIG bonuses, about 5% of the amount of lard that President Obama just doled out in pork that is mostly wasted, everyone in Washington is hyperventilating including the folks who gaves the Omnibus spending bill.

The phrase, “Get the beam out of your own eye.” comes to mind.

“Alaska and other states need to be treated fairly,” Governor Palin said. “Much of the stimulus plan we’ve seen focuses on spending for government programs that would be a burden on states to continue funding, and doesn’t focus enough on spending that actually does put people back to work and stimulate the economy. Working with our D.C. staff, I took advantage of the opportunity to speak with Democrats and Republicans to voice my concerns. I appreciate their time and assistance in paying attention to our state.”

Governor Palin discussed troubling elements in the stimulus package including provisions that punish Alaska for forward-funding education, the mass transit funding formula that will limit Alaska opportunities but will pour money into other states, and the “shovel-ready” criteria for projects that northern climates might not be able to accommodate consistently due to the shortened construction season.

The governor continues to express concerns first identified in a Jan. 7 letter to the Alaska congressional delegation about the overall level of spending and the hugely increased deficit our nation is growing. Under the legislation, the U.S. would continue sending money to OPEC nations even as it continues to borrow and miss opportunities to develop domestic supplies of energy.

“Worst of all, the stimulus package rewards states for not planning when it comes to prioritizing for things like education, as Alaska has planned ahead by forward-funding 21 percent of our General Fund dollars for this very important priority,” said Palin. “It appears only those states that did not plan ahead with education will benefit. States like Alaska should not be punished for being responsible; yet that’s what the plan means for Alaska right now.”

The governor has asked the nation’s leaders to look at these issues to ensure fairness in the stimulus package and that the package does not harm the long-term fiscal health of the nation. Contrary to some news reports, she looks forward to continuing to work with Alaska’s congressional delegation to accomplish the state’s goals.

As Jim Geraghty points out, Governor Palin doesn’t really take a stand, yay or nay on the stimulus package. She identifies issues with it, but doesn’t come out against it foursquare. Part of this is due to the practicality of being a Governor. She doesn’t have a vote on this and she has to make sure that if this thing does pass that it’s not unfavorable to her state. That said, conservatives really are looking for leadership and Governor Palin needs to show some and this would seem to be a good opportunity.

This week, the hard work of selling of the stimulus goes into high gear, as President Obama prepares to head to Capitol Hill on Tuesday to talk reluctant Republicans into getting behind the $825 billion economic rescue package.

“He wants to at the end of the day to go to the American public and say this is not the White House’s package, it’s not the Democrats’ package, it’s a bipartisan package,” Stuart Rothenberg, editor of The Rothenberg Political Report, told ABC News. “That frankly spreads some of the blame around if stuff doesn’t work and I think he’s willing to do that even if Republicans have to get some credit.”

He’ll need to be persuasive. Today, Republican leaders made it loud and clear they want a stimulus — just not this one.

“Right now, given the concerns that we have over the size of this package and all of the spending in this package, we don’t think it’s going to work,” House Republican Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, told NBC. “And so if it’s the plan that I see today, put me down in the ‘no’ column.”

Indeed, while there may be one or two straglers, I would not be surprised if not a single House Republican supports the Stimulus package. It passed both the House Appropriations and Ways and Means Committee on party line votes. This is key. During GOP Control and the first two years of Demcratic Control, Appropriators have been the biggest spenders among the House Republicans. If not one of them will back the bill, you’ll have trouble finding any Republican to back it.

While I’m nervous about the cave-in possibility as happened with the bailout, which was supported by Minority Leaders Rep. John Boehner (R-Oh.) and Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) among several other Republicans who should have known better. The difference between the $700 billion bailout and the Stimulus Bill is that there was some plan behind the $700 billion: Use $700 billion to unfreeze the Credit Markets by buying up bad debts. Then once the Housing market recovers, sell the bad debts at a profit.  It was a plan. Not a good one, but a plan. The Stimulus Package is no such thing. As described by David Brooks. David Brooks describes the Stimulus in the New York Times. Even dinner with “The One” couldn’t dull his criticism much:

The bill marked up Wednesday in the Appropriations Committee is a muddled mixture of short-term stimulus haste and long-term spending commitments. It is an unholy marriage that manages to combine the worst of each approach — rushed short-term planning with expensive long-term fiscal impact.

The bill has three essential failings. First, it lacks any strategic vision. This $825 billion bill has to be passed within weeks. There’s no time for fundamental rethinking or new approaches. Instead, there’s a sloppy profusion of 152 different appropriations — off-the-shelf ideas that mostly create costlier versions of the status quo.

The committee staff took the kernel of President Obama’s vision — infrastructure programs to create jobs — and surrounded it with an undisciplined sprawl of health, education, entitlement and other spending. There’s money for nurse training, Medicare, Head Start, boatyard support, home weatherization and so on. Eleven of the programs in the bill account for the vast majority of the actual job creation. The rest may be worthy or not, but they have little to do with stimulus. The total package is so diffuse, it costs $223,000 to create a single job…

But the stimulus bill emerging in the House of Representatives does neither of these things. While you may think a good deal of this fund is going to rebuidling America’s infrastructure which would spur job growth, you’d be wrong again. Only 3% of the Stimulus is going to pay for Infrastructure needs and much of that is hypertargeted.

What we have here is a stimulus bill that won’t stimulate. Even the tax cut portion of it is not written in a way that it will stimulate economic growth.

The reason Obama wants their support is for political cover if it doesn’t work, and it’s not going to work. The whole stimulus bill is only a pretext for more spending that won’t actually help the economy and it deserves defeated.

The Associated Press injected an editorial comment into the news… again. A few days ago, the AP issued a piece headlined Senate Republicans block heating aid bill, in which the AP made it seem as if Republicans don’t care about “the poor” and are only interested in mere political partisanship. This report featured quotes showing how wonderful and caring the Democrats are but not a single quote from any Republican to explain their stance. It also clearly discounted the GOP position while positively spinning the Democratic position.

The story concerns the GOP’s blocking of a Senate Democrat bill to double the Federal aid to “the poor” to subsidize their heating and air-conditioning bills. First of all, I wasn’t aware that it was Constitutionally mandated that “the poor” get free air-conditioning, but that is another story. The editorializing comes in with the second paragraph.

Although a dozen Senate Republicans support the measure, most voted with GOP leaders who would rather spend the time trumpeting their call to expand offshore oil drilling before Congress takes six weeks off for vacation and the presidential nominating conventions.

What’s with this offhanded “GOP leaders who would rather spend the time trumpeting their call to expand offshore oil drilling” business? If that isn’t editorializing, what is?

This report also reported the hand wringing of “Indenependent” Bernie Sanders of Vermont — who nearly always supports the Democrat Party line — to the effect that the GOP is filled with meanies.

“Do we vote to keep the old, the sick and kids alive when the weather gets cold or very, very hot, or do we spend money on people who make huge campaign contributions? That is part of what this debate is about.”

Nice populist blather.

And where is the GOP response to all this populist moralizing? How did the AP explain the GOP position in a fair and balanced way?

Well… they didn’t.

The story is entirely flavored to paint Republicans as mean to the poor, uncaring about the people, and interested only in cheap political partisanship.

And that, folks, is the AP way.

I have been made aware of a great resource tool for tracking bills that have taken a vote in Congress. It is called Govit.com (http://www.govit.com/) and it really helps when looking to see what Congress voted on, who voted for what, and when it happened.
