Don’t Trust the Establishment
Posted by Adam Graham in : Presidential Race 2008Mark Kilmer argues that National Review is no longer the conscience of conservatism. This, of course earns a “duh” from me. I remember on the day of the Iowa Strawpoll, National Review’s commentary mocked John Cox for not being a big name. “How dare this guy from outside politics try and run for office.” Despite the fact that John Cox was the most down the line conservative in the race.
Of course, the rest of the Washington DC establishment is much the same when it comes to Presidential politics: tired, weak, and clueless as to what plays outside of the Beltway.
This isn’t to say groups like National Review, National Right-to-Life, Club for Growth, and the American Conservative Union don’t have their place, they definitely do. But the process of nominating a President doesn’t begin and end inside the beltway. As with most things, wisdom lies outside Washington, DC.
