Filibustering Is Not Leadership
Posted by Andrea Graham in : AbortionAs we learn from Corrine at Howard Empowered People, our friends on the left don’t understand what Democracy is:
Bob Fertik at Democrats.com has a list of eight Democratic senators who he suspects are not supporting a filibuster. On Tuesday, Harry Reid indicated in a meeting with progressive lobbyists that he had nearly 44 votes against Alito but Alito would still be confirmed 56-44.
Indeed, its this lovely thing called “Advice and Consent”. The Democrats are furious that Alito is going to be confirmed for the silly reason that more people favor him. In lefty world, 44 votes should beat 56 everytime.
Corrine goes on to write:
It takes just 1 Senator to start the filibuster and 41 to vote against cloture. Surely Reid can guarantee 41 votes. And if John Kerry, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, Evan Bayh or Russ Feingold plan to run for president, Fertik asks how can you lead the party if you can’t lead a filibuster?”
The question is absurd on its face. It underlies the reason why Senators are rarely elected President. A filibuster is not leadership, its obstructionism. Now, that may be good or bad, but that’s what it is. Then again, that’s the Democrats have the courage to offer America. This is why despite Republican foibles Democrats manage to lose election after election.
Those who believe legitimate political victories are obtained through the arrogance of unelected courts imposing their will, call obstructionism leadership. Yet, the Filibuster will fail and judging by the reaction we’ll see on the Left, I can hardly wait. Corrine writes:
Personally, my greatest concern once this is over is the potentially large negative impact the weak Democratic response to Alito’s confirmation will have on Howard’s 50-state strategy. In the comments over at Kos and other blogs, I’ve seen people threatening to cancel their Democracy Bonds and refuse to donate to the DNC ever again if the Democrats fold like a cheap tent on the filibuster.
Yet another reason to Confirm Alito and sticking to the ACLU and their allies on the left.
Speaking of that, Jay at Stop the ACLU has a post up on ACLU hypocrisy for today’s blogburst

A filibuster would be a pr nightmare for the dems . You can only use such tactics on very rare occasions. What seems to be lost on these people is the fact that President Bush may get another pick or 2 . The electorate will not accept calling each and every nominee a special exception. I would love to see it. Bring it on.

The good news is that after Alito, anyone to the left of Janice Rogers-Brown couldn’t really be called a “Special Exception”. Even with Brown, they’d have trouble as they all just voted to allow her to come to a vote.
