Friday Night: Bible Seminar: But Christians Don’t Criticize Other People
Posted by Adam Graham in : ChristianityWow, I’m getting a full-fledged Bible Seminar (minus any actual citations to Bible verses) from a student at ISU posting on my blog. She’s upset about a post I made criticizing Tara Rowe at The Politcal Game for a post regarding correspondence with State Senate Majority Bart Davis. Of Tara’s reply in which she accused Senator Davis of treating her as a “an average know-nothing college student.” Here’s what I wrote regarding Tara’s letter and general tone:
No, Tara doesn’t strike me as one of those “average know-nothing college students” (those would be her constituents, who voted for her as a Student Senator.) She strikes me as one of those above average, slightly arrogant students who believes she’s figured the world out, and has little respect for anyone who disagrees with her. Given that, Davis’ response was completely appropriate.
Of course the idea of saying “average know nothing college students” by a Student Senator insults her constituents and that was what I was referring to in the first paragraph. Its one of those things where I said Tara’s obviously fairly bright, but also somewhat arrogant in her views. She treated the leader of our State Senate with some undeserved contempt. So, I stated my opinion.
Well, today, I got sage Bible advice from an ISU Student:
I am sorry, but when did Jesus teach us to criticize people just because we don’t agree with a decision they make? Jesus taught us to love our enemies, to bless them that curse us, do good to them that hate us, and pray for them which despitefully use us and persecute us. Perhaps you should spend less time blogging and more time reading from the book which is the foundation for your religion, Christianity.
Wow, I’m not sure I criticized Tara for a decision (unless arrogance counts.) Second, I don’t hate Tara. In fact I said she was “an above average student”. While there’s certainly a case for reading the Bible more and Blogging less, I reject the idea behind this post and a subsequent one she made on a poetry post (I deleted her comment from there BTW. Don’t touch my poetry. If you like it, talk about it, don’t go off on unrelated political stuff.):
Maybe you can recite this before you criticize people you don’t know??? Just an idea.
Of course, our ISU Student followed up on the Original post with this:
I am sorry, I should’ve left the reference because you might not know where to find that particular scripture (oh, and I will post an extra scripture that might benefit you-your welcome):
Matthew 5:44-45 (hint: it is in the NEW Testament).
Which leads me to wonder whether they’ve started to offer classes on Arrogance.
The idea behind the post is that Jesus was just a soft, pillow guy. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the most dangerous thing in the world is a little bit of scripture, because taken in isolation it leads us to an unbalanced life.
Christ had some very critical observations:
And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?-Luke 11:39,40
Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?-Matthew 23:33
But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.-Matthew 16:23
I could go on, but here’s the point. The Jesus of the Bible wasn’t some pansey who never said anything controversial. If you look at Jesus, he was someone who stirred things up so much that people wanted to kill him and you don’t do that, by just being so soft and kind all the time.
The thing that’s really sick is that these people don’t believe that, for example, you shouldn’t criticize people you don’t know. If that were the standard, none of them would have blogs, they’d all hang out on Xanga and whine about their parents. Its just an argument to get people to shut up, to silence people, and I’m not going for it.
I’ve got two words that show their duplicity on this: Brandi Swindell. These leftists roasted Brandi up one side, down the other. They’ve thrown every dirty and cruel personal attack they can think of on her and I respond to some of it, because its so wrong, and some of this stuff is so vicious.
Its not saying something like, “She’s slightly arrogant.” Oh my gosh, what an awful accusation. I mean, she’s got to be in tears and scandalized.
I trust from reading her blog that Tara is capable of handling being called “slightly arrogant” and still managing to live her life. Might be a good suggestion for her friends, too.

No one is saying Jesus The Christ didn’t have harsh words and didn’t turn over the tables because of the money changers in the temple. But, Jesus did have a perfect love which enabled Him to die for the sins of the world, even when He knew that most of the world would reject Him and His teachings. Instead of point to the minority of Christ’s actions and words, why don’t you take a look at how He spent most of His life? That would be serving mankind and spending His time with the so-called undesirables of the world.
In fact, my own religion teaches that at the judgement seat of Christ, when our sins will be revealed and it would be so easy for Christ to condemn us to hell, in this day of wrath, He will remember mercy. Instead of focusing on the Christ that you want to remember and know, maybe you could focus on the real Christ who loves all of us. Or maybe you don’t want to remember and know the harsher Christ, you just needed to use that part of Christ as a convenient example to drive home a point.
The issue here isn’t criticizing people you don’t know, it is criticizing people when your criticisms are so off the mark it only reveals your ignorance and removes any credibility you have or could have. For your benefit, and the benefit of your readers, maybe you could give people like Tara a fairer shake.
Clearly Tara hit a nerve with you and you felt like you had to respond and not only criticize people who voted for her, but also call her a name. Certainly you can’t say Jesus would advocate such a thing? Or do you need to search the Bible for another convenient example to justify your action(s)?
The actions of an imperfect man can never be justified by the actions and words of the only perfect man to walk the face of the earth-our Lord and Savior, the greatest man to have ever lived, who lives now, and who will return to earth to remind us, once again, why the greatest commandment He gave was to love our fellow man.

Could you quote where I said anything untrue. The words about average college students where Tara’s and it was she who insulted her own constituents. I merely pointed out how insulting her statement was. And yes, I said Tara was slightly arrogant. Do you deny the truth of that?

“Could you quote where I said anything untrue.”
The criticisms lobbed against Tara and her constituents are both false and completely ridiculous.
“The words about average college students where Tara’s and it was she who insulted her own constituents.”
Tara never called her constituents average college students.
“I merely pointed out how insulting her statement was.”
Right. Nice try.
“And yes, I said Tara was slightly arrogant. Do you deny the truth of that?”
Absolutely.

Accidentally posted this comment on the original post in question, so I will repost it here: you also said Tara has “little respect” for those who disagree with her, which is also FALSE.

Tara’s comments regarding Senator Davis and those who opposed her particular education policy both ring with arrogance and show a lack of respect for her opponents.

That is your opinion and the opinion of someone who hasn’t met the person they are criticizing. I would be real careful when you criticize someone based on one blog post, real careful.

And I actually did quote the specific verses in the Bible, so maybe you can edit your blog…?

Jessi, are you threatening something? Second, what part of my blog post are you proposing I update?
