In the Inbox: You’ve Got Self-Destruction

Posted by Adam Graham in : Politics

I’m certain My wife and I are not the only one to get this chain mail:

Fellow Republicans,

Read the email below. Please do NOT vote Republican this Nov. 2006 or 2008. Either do
not vote or vote for a third-party candidate.

We cannot support a party that tolerates amnesty for law breakers.

Forward this to every Republican you know.

Now, I’ve got two inclinations on this. I think this may be an example of pure and simple sabotage. Democrats sense the Republican angst and plan on capitalizing on it.

The second possibility is that its a bunch of discouraged Republicans. Now, these aren’t the New Nationalists I’ve written about before. The idea of voting for any old third party to show disgust is just destructive. Its not building a new party or taking over the existing crazy Constitution Party. Its just throwing your hands up and playing a childish self-destructive game, rather than working to change the leadership we have in the nation to something more positive. .

Either way, I don’t listen to people I don’t know who send me e-mails telling me to take my ball and go home. Especially when I’m suspect of their motives. I trust other conservatives are smart enough to take the same approach.

Could you give us a more productive alternative, other than voting for people bent on destroying our nation so we can have senators with an R after their name instead of a D?

I’ve got a little news for you. I find that email not only unsurprising, but probably quite accurately portrays the feelings of a huge number of disaffected moderate conservatives. Oh, and it’s worse that just voting for a 3rd party. It’s a matter of flipping directly to Democrats. Regardez:

I am typically part of that crucial 20% of the electorate that finds itself in the center because there are some issues that I support on either side of the mythical partisan fence. Here is where the “conservatives” have LOST ME:

    1. Fiscal responsibility. Total myth. Government is larger, porkier, and more lumbering than before. Strike One.
    2. Hyper-religious Nuttery. Intelligent Design, Stem-cell research, morning-after pill, etc. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Strike Two.
    3. Illegal Immigration. This is item numero uno. Pathetic pandering to small and large businesses alike who exploit desperate workers and drive down wages across the board. Pathetic pandering to Mexico, for, well, I have no idea what for. Pathetic pandering to a mythical hispanic electorate and pathetic handwaving and bloviation about “doing something” when in reality after all the dust settles we’ll welcome 15 million more illigals in the next 2 decades and do this dance again in 2025. I live in California, have a legal immigrant wife, and I utterly detest how this has been handled for 20 years since the LAST amnesty. Strike Three, Republicans, sit on down.

    For all the above idiocy I am going to sacrifice my support for strong national defense, for worldwide promotion of democracy, for promotion of free-market capitalism, for personal responsibility and lower taxes and rewarding of personal effort;

I will give in to accepting higher taxes and more social welfare and political correctness, I will have to watch the death penalty go the way of the dodo. Whatever.

Seriously, the three items above have me so boiling mad I’m gone. That’s how bad this has become.

I am telling you, I am a perfect example, I am citizen prototype, and the middle 5-10% of the electorate, like me, has flipped. It’s over.
