Lettuce Talk About Immigration Weekend Open Trackbacks
Posted by Adam Graham in : Open TrackbacksI wrote about this over at WhereIStand. John McCain was giving a speech to the AFL-CIO and according to MSNBC he made the following remark. (Hat Tip: Clayton Cramer) regarding the necessity of illegal immigration:
McCain responded by saying immigrants were taking jobs nobody else wanted. He offered anybody in the crowd $50 an hour to pick lettuce in Arizona.
Shouts of protest rose from the crowd, with some accepting McCain’s job offer.
“I’ll take it!” one man shouted.
McCain insisted none of them would do such menial labor for a complete season. “You can’t do it, my friends.”
Now, this raises a point. If you take $50 an hour, multiply that by 40, that’s $2000 a week times 52=$104,000 per year for picking lettuce. Now, I know that the Lettuce Season isn’t all year, but I assume that we’d just pick something else during the Winter. The point is the average American makes around $33,000 a year. So would you be willing to take up the hard work of lettuce picking for $71,000 extra a year. Now is your chance to stand and be counted.
