Lord of the Blogs
Posted by Adam Graham in : BloggingI’ve been trying to rap my mind around this for the past few days and I just can’t do it. The challenge from Sean at My Election Analysis has been racking my brain for the last few days:
Your favorite bloggers as the cast of Lord of the Rings. How would you put them? People on both the Left and Right are encouraged to play.
I generally thrive in these creative thought meme things, but no luck. Why?
Having seen the movie, its a story of good and maliciously evil.
Whatever you think of Glenn Greenwald, Kos, Firedog Lake, Wonkette, Pam Spaulding, or anyone else, its hard to really cast them in that light.
On the other hand, what about the good guys? Can anyone on either side of the Blogosphere said to be as wise as Gandolf? If they are, what are they doing typing their political opinions in pajamas/underwear/we don’t want to know.
I suppose you could find plenty of Merrys and Pipins (the somewhat flightly types who are useful on occasion) out there; the world is full of them, and so is the blogosphere. There are plenty Gimli the Dwarves out there (the brave, aggressive types.)
Random Yak would make a good Sam. The rest, I’m sorry I can’t see. I don’t read anyone’s blog and say, “You know, this person reminds me of an arrow-shooting elf.” I’m sorry, I don’t see it.
The choices for the role of Frodo and Aragon are tough. The guy carries the ring of power and is tortured by the thing all the way to Mordor, risking his life and facing treachery, confusion, and madness. One of Sean’s readers found a Frodo:
Frodo: Sean. Willingly accepting a great burden, he sets forth to track all the House, Senate, and Governor races in 2006. Had no idea how big a burden it would become.
I could see that would become a bit of a burden. Not quite the Ring of Power, but still… As long as he doesn’t throw America into the cracks of Mount Doom.
Tolkien was a Christian and Aragorn is really a type of Christ for a variety of reasons. The whole, “they thought he was dead and now he was alive” and how all was restored after the last battle with the Return of the King. Given what Aragorn was, I was surprised to read this comparison:
Aragorn: Instapundit. King
of the blogosphere and wiser than he lets on.
So if Glenn Reynolds=Aragorn and Aragorn=Christ, then therefore does Glenn Reynolds=Christ to this author? “The First Church of Instapundit?”
Even, if not, the comparison seems a tad overblown. Maybe, I’m missing the point, and that would be why I’m not playing this one.
BTW, if you did not understand this post, go rent the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. You owe it to yourself.

You know, I’m flattered to be considered a good Sam. Of all the possible characters and casting choices, Sam is the one who best displays what it means to be loyal to a friend, to keep his word and to do his duty at any cost. Thank you for that assessment. I’ll do my best to stay worthy of the title.
