Marriage Amendment Politics
Posted by Adam Graham in : PoliticsReading in the blogosphere tonight. Here’s my thought on how this is playing politically. I think for the White House, its going to end up to be little help.
To me, I think you can trace the moment things started to go downhill for W when it became clear in the press Bush wasn’t going to press the Amendment, which had been a key point of his campaign. He went ahead and squandered his political Capital and then in the middle of the election year, Bush has rediscovered the issue.
It seen by a lot of people as a cynical power play. That’s the sense I get out there. People doubt his sincerity and really see this as a distraction to the whole immigration controversey.
Bush has perhaps succeeded too well in pleasing in base on the courts. With Roberts, Scalia, Alito, and Thomas have all got to be considered very unlikely to overturn traditional marriage, and Justice Kennedy is going to be squeamish about turning the course of our civilization upside down on a whim. So, the demand for the Amendment is down, not that it should be, but nevertheless it is.
TMH Bacon Bits has a post up today expressing a lot of anger on this immigration issue that many people share:
Forget the game of pretending to secure the border with removable promises: Swiss cheese-like wall sections and temporary neutered troops. Serious and permanent border control must take place first and foremost – no tough-sounding patches. This, after all, is your job: to secure our nation’s borders and protect its sovereignty.
Contrary to some of your attitudes, we aren’t sub-human bigots. We know the self-inflicted plight of the millions of illegals within our borders, but we also know they are not the oppressed of the world, nor are they the starving masses – they merely illegally seek the better life that all immigrants to America seek, but unlike the waves of others, they break our immigration laws with impunity and self-righteousness while bizarrely demanding that we capitulate to their wishes. They blatantly march on our American soil desecrating our flag and challenging our rights to not have our bona fide laws infringed upon. You and your friends, with whom you chose to side, merely encourage and cheer for this lawbreaking in this travesty of justice, while we recoil in shear disbelief as to the degree of GOP complicity…
It is in this order that I have loyalty: my God, my family, my conservative values , and my country — but no longer my political party.
The latter must earn my loyalty back – and you can’t do it by paying me off with silly faux moves toward conservative causes. It pains me to say it, but I no longer trust you.
The GOP has its work cut out for it on this and this Amendment isn’t going to help much.
