Men of the Year

This is my big year-end wrap up column where I discuss what I believe were the most important people and stories of 2005.

Men of the Year: Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI

John Paul’s historic 27 year reign came to an end with his death earlier this year. We were reminded of his greatness and his passion for freedom and the sanctity of life. In his younger days, the Pope showed us how to live: with vigor and courage. In his final days, he showed how a Christian should die.

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was not the media favorite to replace the Pope, but the College of Cardinals didn’t ask the media. Those who advocated a loosening of the Catholic Church’s, orthodoxy, commitment to the sanctity of human life and traditional values were given a rude awakening as the new Pope made it clear where he stood time and time again. The German didn’t shun controversy, but spoke forth his opinion with firmness and civility.
