More Likely
Posted by Adam Graham in : PoliticsAlan at Idablue has this to say about a recent post that absolutely frosted me:
I did have a sentence wondering whether the Aryan Warrior voted for Kerry or Bush, but I removed that within minutes of posting it. I was uncomfortable with the implication. I removed the sentence hours before I knew Adam was cheesed off about it. I will say straight up that I believe Aryans and racists are more likely to vote Republican, for a couple of reasons. One, Dems tend to get most of the black and Jewish vote, and two, the GOP for decades has promoted its “southern strategy”. That strategy was intended to appeal to the white southern vote along racial lines, so would tend to attract the racist vote.
That’s nice. So, let me go ahead and say this:
I think that eco-terrorists are far more likely to vote Democrat. You know, the unabomber didn’t have Dan Quayle’s Standing Firm or the Quotable Ronald Reagan in his little cabin, but did have Earth in the Balance by Al Gore. They’ve really embraced the whole tree hugger thing. But, I’m just saying the technically that those who spike trees and blow up ski resorts are going to have more affinity with the Democratic cause, nothing real inflamatory…
I think Stalinists-style Communists are more likely to be Democrats, because the Democratic Party is closer to their platform. The Communist Party endorsed Kerry last time. Those who would like a blood bath for a grand revolution that would leave millions of innocent Americans dead are more likely to vote Democrat…
Am I being fair? Or am I casting the whole Democratic Party in the light few bad actors to score cheap political points? If I am, how is that any different than Alan’s statement above? (By the way, this is a case of illustrating absurdity by being absurd.)

I agree that Earth First and socialist/communist types are more likely to vote Dem. Both parties have a lunatic fringe. The presence of a few whackos doesn’t say squat about the party. Racists in the R party doesn’t mean that all Rs are racist.
Do you deny that the GOP had a southern strategy that essentially appealed along racial lines?
BTW, “Reductio ad absurdum is also often used to describe an argument where a conclusion is derived in the belief that everyone (or at least those being argued against) will accept that it is false or absurd. However, this is a weak form of reductio, as the decision to reject the premise requires that the conclusion is accepted as being absurd. ” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reductio_ad_absurdum
