Now, They’ve Gone Too Far

Posted by Adam Graham in : Blogging

First, they compared me to terrorists. Others have attacked me as a danger to society. Then one of them threatened physical harm. But now Idaho Liberal Bloggers have gone too far. They set up a thread to complain about how slow my blog is.

A couple suggestions were made. First, there was the thought that all those widgety things in my sidebar are the big culprit. Funny thing is that other blogs have even more and seem to do okay.

Chris at Unequivocal Notion opined the issue could be resolved simply. “Maybe that $1.99 plan for 50MB of bandwidth isn’t working out so well.” If only the solution were that simple. I’m with HostIcan (aka HostIcant) with 6500 GB of Bandwidth.

The issue, if anyone is wondering, is actually server load. That means I’m just getting too many visits and too much demand on the server, so therefore they shut the site down until demand lets up. My host has been no help, and in fact I switched over to a VPS, which also couldn’t help me solve the problem, so I canceled it and went back to HostIcan’t, because I’ve got a contract.

I’ve troubleshot MySQL, Wordpress, PHP, Apache: all in search of the reason. In the end, having passed through the seven levels of support Hades, I must declare myself at an end. I’ve enabled WP Super Cache and the Internal Wordpress Cache. I’m able to keep my blog functional 80-90% of the time and still get some sleep and actually be able to write something rather than troubleshoot my blog every night. Something is wrong somewhere, but it’s not my sidebar and it’s not that I haven’t bought enough bandwidth.

I apologize for any unavailability and would encourage anyone who has a problem with load time to subscribe to the blog feed, so this won’t be an issue:

Dude. If you’re paying for 6.5 terabtyes of bandwidth and your site is crashing with a daily average of 375 (according to your SM) then someone, somewhere along the line if ripping you off.

    Just an FYI.

It seems like the main page is loading quicker today, but comment pages are still as slow as they ever were. There are syntax errors still showing up on IE, but it seems like that shouldn’t slow it down too much. Hope you find a “smoking gun” so it loads more quickly soon!

Chris, I agree, somewhere along the line I’m being ripped off. Of course, what they say the issue is, is that websites are running on a server and that when certain scripts run, it pushes me beyond my allowed RAM.

Bubblehead, I actually went ahead and changed the code for WP internal cache, which I’m hoping will solve someone of the problem. I try and Troubleshoot this when I can, but honestly it was taking most of my days for the better part of a month. Now, that the blog’s back up most of the time, I troubleshoot when I get the time and focus on productive activities whenever possible.

Would it be that difficult to try a streamlined version, and just test to see if that has any effect?

Hostican’s been ripping a lot of people off lately. My advice is to jump ship and fina d new host.

Yes, it would, Alan. As I explained, you’ve misidentified the problem. My problem is not too many plugins, too many items in the sidebar, it is server load, it is something with HostICan

I like my plugins, I like my special features. I like my sideblog, and there’s no Earthly reason, I shouldn’t be use it. I do not want a bland, boring blog. If you want a streamlined version of my blog, try the link above, it’s just the text.
