Obama’s Ambassadors Come to Parents House

Posted by Adam Graham in : Presidential Race 2008

My mom in Kalispell called today and told me two Obama people had been by the house, this being the second time. They asked her if she was supporting Obama and my mom replied she wasn’t. The Obama then asked who my mom was supporting.

My mom replied she was supporting McCain and when Mom was asked as a follow up why she wasn’t supporting Obama, Mother cited the pro-life issue. The Obama supporter came back by telling Mom that Obama was personally opposed to abortion, but was a Constitutional law professor and would preserve the right to choose.  They were at the wrong door,  and my mom replied there was no right to take human life.

My first reaction to their visit was tied to Obama’s urging for his supporters to to “Get in the faces” of Independents and Republicans who opposed his candidacy and they were “his ambassadors.” However, my mom didn’t think they were getting in their faces. Mom said that the lady looked middle class and the conversation seemed to be polite enough.

No story should give Republicans more antacid attacks than this. Frankly, Obama’s use of new technology or massive television ads isn’t quite as scary as the prospect of thousands of well-spoken Obama supporters going door to door. It really is the most effective style of politicking and I know some people voted for me when I ran for office just because I was sincere and I came to their door.

Of course, if practiced by the wrong people (such as young twenty-somethings who don’t know better and take Obama’s “in your face” comments to heart), it could backfire. Nevertheless, assuming your opponents’ stupidity isn’t smart strategy. If it’s been employed on a wide-basis, it represents something that Republicans need to counter.
