Oh Brother! The Liberals Have Come to Save Us

For conceited letter of the week, the Award has to goes to Will Cavanaugh in Wednesday’s letters:

I enjoyed the group of letters you published on July 24 castigating the letter writer from Mountain Home who disliked some of the people moving to Idaho. The writers were all reasonable and moderate, and it’s good to know there are people like that here.

But there, right in the middle of Margaret Gunnell’s otherwise fine letter was the sentence: “Why in the world would intelligent liberals want to move to a state that is the most conservative in the country?”

Well, as a liberal who is hopefully intelligent and who just moved here, I can only say that perhaps we have come to bring enlightenment to the state. Or perhaps we came for the same reason other people are coming. “Intelligent liberal” is a redundancy anyway.

Wow, the great gods from California and New York have deigned to descend from on high to bring enlightenment to us poor mortals in the Rocky Mountain West. I’ve often thought some folks think like this, never had anyone say it so blatantly. Not a way to make good neighbors, that’s for sure.
