Republicans Threaten to Leave Christian Conservatives

There’s been much discussion about a recent meeting where Christian Conservatives are making contigency plans for a possible Conservative third party should Rudy Giuliani be the GOP nominee. Much of it has been off target.

Headline of a Red State diary: “Christian Leaders Threaten to Abandon Republicans.” To quote Lex Luthor in Superman Returns, “Wrong!”

When a former Democrat (such as Ronald Reagan) states, “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left me.” Republicans readily applaud the statement because it symbolizes the truth that political parties are about more than their own power, but actually about ideas that matter.

However, we expect Christian Conservatives to put this aside, and even be castigated or made to feel guilty because of it when in fact those supporting Rudy Giuliani are those who are planning to utterly abandon long-time political coalition partners for short-term political gain.

It is the Republican establishment which is plotting to break faith with grassroots activists who’ve spent nearly 30 years faithfully working in the GOP no matter how unispiring their candidates(George H.W. Bush and Bob Dole) might be. This is akin to accusing your wife of breaking up your marriage because she made it clear that she would file for divorce if you go to a brothel.
