Satire News: Onion Files Suit Against Democrats

Posted by Adam Graham in : Politics

Washington-The Onion, one of America’s leading satirical journals has filed suit against the Democratic leaders in Congress alleging Copyright infringement and racketeering.

According to Onion Managing Editor Sally May Holmes, Democratic leaders have frustrated their efforts to lampoon the news, by making various gaffes for which satire would be redundant.

Said Holmes, “Where have you gone Tip O’Neill? That’s what I ask myself every day. I mean how do you possibly parody a congress that voted 3:1 to keep an earmark in a bill with no clue whether the company the money was appropriated to actually existed.”

For Holmes, the lawsuit became necessary when Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) “stepped over the line into copyright infringement” with his recent statement that President Bush was to blame for the Democratic Congress’ 14% approval ratings.

“Now, come on folks,” said Holmes. “One of my people had a satirical piece written about Democrats blaming Bush for their approval ratings the night before. The piece was going to be posted the following afternoon and then out bounces Harry Reid and blows the whole piece. It may have just been a throw away line he used to make an idiot of itself, but making an idiot out of Harry Reid is how we make a living.”

Holmes also said she’d contacted the US Attorney to investigate whether Congress was properly licensed to produces parodies, as they may be in violation of federal anti-trust law and warned that Congress may be unfairly trying to drive satirists out of business. She has opened the door for other satirists such as Scrappleface’s Scott Ott to join the lawsuit. Ott was not immediately available for comment.

In a join statement, Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declared their solidarity in standing against “big satire.”
