Shades of 1996? Weekend Open Trackbacks

Posted by Adam Graham in : Open Trackbacks

The Colorado Rockies are down but not out in the 2007 World Series. While Boston has got an edge, those who are true fans of the game know that as the immortal Yogi Berra once said, “It ain’t over till it’s over.”

The history of baseball is filled with teams coming back from deficits. This series and it’s opening reminds me quite a bit of the 1996 World Series.

Consider:

-The 2007 Red Sox entered the series after coming back from a 3-1 deficit by destroying the Cleveland Indians 30-5. The 1996 Braves entered the series after coming back from a 3-1 deficit by destroying the St. Louis Cardinals 32-1.

-The 2007 Rockies came into the series on 8 days rest after sweeping the Diamondbacks, the 1996 Yankees entered with talks of being rusty after taking down the Orioles in 5 games and entering on 6 days rest.

-In Games 1 and 2 of the World Series, The red-hot 1996 Braves outscored the Yankees 16-1 behind dominant performances by John Smoltz and Greg Madduz. The Red-hot 2007 Red Sox outscored the Rockies 15-2 in the first two games of the series.

-The 1996 Yankees featured a Rookie of the Year Candidate and budding Superstar Shortstop that wears number 2 (Derek Jeter). The 2007 Rockies features a Rookie of the Year Candidate and budding Superstar Shortstop that wears number 2 (Troy Tulowitzki)

-The 1996 Braves won 96 games, as did the 2007 Red Sox.

Of course, the parallels aren’t perfect. For example, the Yankees lost the first two games at home and had to go on the road, while the Rockies go home as one of the best home teams in the National League.

Do I actually think that the 2007 will unfold as the 1996 version did? No, but this little excercise reminds that anything can happen in October. It’s a magical time of year when championships are won and lost all the time. It’s wild, it’s crazy, it’s World Series baseball and whatever happens in Games 3, 4 (and 5-7 if necessary), it’ll be a fun ride.

Now onto the trackback party. First, the rules:

1) Post about anything that’s in good taste. No porn, no spam, no profanity.

2) Send me a trackback of any tasteful post you want and as soon as I check my blog, I’ll update this post with your link provided you link back to this thread.

3) Deadline is Sunday at 11:00 PM MT. Further trackbacks won’t be posted after that time.

For your Convenience here’s today’s link and the trackback. Below are other great parties:
