Student to McCain: Why Are You Here?

Posted by Adam Graham in : Presidential Race 2008

John McCain went to visit his old high school as he continues his biography tour, visiting places that have been key in the life and times of John McCain. However, a high school student asks a question that has been on my mind for a while:

“What exactly is your purpose in being here?” asked junior Katelyn Halldorson, saying she was told the speech wasn’t supposed to be a political event but it was clear that it wasn’t “completely absent political motivation.”

According to the student, McCain “beat around the bush” and from the CNN report, it appears that was the case. McCain, for reasons that are beyond me seems to be borrowing a page from the Bob Dole playbook, except he’s taking it to another level.

Bob Dole returned to his hometown of Russell, Kansas to deliver a speech. The McCain campaign has become the world’s longest episode of “This is Your Life” or rather “This is My Life.” Certaintly something can be said for the values and places that form people, but this is over-reliance on biography rather than consistently delivering a message to the American people is a tactic that is rarely used except in losing campaigns.
