The Amazonian Candidate

Posted by Adam Graham in : Presidential Race 2008

First of all, an observation on Brian Schweitzer’s speech. I was proud to not vote for Brian Schweitzer, the first time he ran for office. There’s always seemed to be something not quite real about him. When I see him, the phrase “poser” comes to mind. And unlike Obama, reading from a teleprompter just made it worse.

Secondly, on Hillary’s speech, I will be the last person to enlist in the Fashion Police, but Orange! Orange! I’m a guy and I know you don’t deliver one of the biggest speeches of your life on national television wearing Orange. You know, that is actually a color that suits the Clintons, but I always pictured her wearing it in transit after a jury verdict…

In all seriousness, it sounded kind of forced to my ears. There was one part of the speech that particularly bothered me. It was when she was listing all the things she was proud of, “Proud woman…Proud mother…Proud Democrat…” I noticed “Proud Wife” didn’t make the list, but it was something more than that which nagged at me that Amy Holmes hit upon:

From that introductory video, you’d never know Hillary was married to Bill.  Or that she had a father.  It was like Planet of the Amazons.

That was it. There was a distinct feeling that those of us with “Y” chromosones were kind of left out of this whole life of Hillary thing. It was a radical feminist vision on the national stage with men not named.

I also think the introductory video showed the arrogance of Hillary. Apparently, the world is going to be different and better for everyone because she lost a campaign she should have won and got 18 million votes. There was the rhetoric on the video about the glass ceiling.

The glass ceiling thing is a cop out that blames her campaign’s defeat on gender, rather than the failings of her campaign. I’m glad the Clinton era’s over so we can get personality-based arrogance and…

Oh wait, Obama. Never mind.

She’s not completely devoid of male influences. She was named after Sir Edmund, after all.

I loved the orange. Not only is it the unofficial color of the Democratic netroots (via Daily Kos), it looked great against the blue backdrop. It’s also symbolic of freedom for Tibet. I’m not sure any of that mattered to Hillary, but I thought it was a bold choice and that she looked great. Her speech rocked, too. Hillary is no radical feminist; she represents mainstream American women (and men).

The Clinton era was over eight years ago. It just became official last night. And if you get around to reading “Dreams From my Father,” you can finally put all the Obama personality cult nonsense behind you. He’s the real deal, Adam. Onward.

Julie, Hillary is mainstream when compared to Obama only.
