The Bible on: Sleep

Posted by Andrea Graham in : Andrea's Posts

Bet somewhere between 25-75% of you didn’t even know the bible covers sleep! The word itself is used 89 times in the 21st Century King James.
Let’s get the tongue in cheek out of the way first:

Bible suggestion number one on getting a good night’s sleep: Get Married.

Genesis 2:21, 22
And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof. And the rib which the LORD God had taken from man, made He a woman and brought her unto the man.

Okay, onto a more serious note.

Here are some good verses on getting a good night’s rest (and causes for the lack there of):

Esther 6:1
On that night the king could not sleep; and he commanded to bring the book of records of the chronicles, and they were read before the king.

Psalm 4:8
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep; for Thou LORD only, makest me dwell in safety.

Psalm 76:5-7
The stouthearted are despoiled; they have slept their sleep, and none of the men of might have found their hands. At Thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, both the chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep.Thou, Thou alone, art to be feared; and who may stand in Thy sight when once Thou art angry?

Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows; for so He giveth His beloved sleep.

Proverbs 6:9-11How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep” So shall thy poverty come as a marauder, and thy want as an armed man.

(There are several proverbs along this vein)

Proverbs 3:24
when thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid; yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

Proverbs 4:16
For they sleep not unless they have done mischief, and their sleep is taken away unless they cause some to fall.

Ecclesiastes 5:12
The sleep of the laboring man is sweet whether he eat little or much, but the abundance of the rich will not permit him to sleep.
