The Daily Response: August 31, 2004

Donna Yule writes in today’s Letters:,

“I read your Aug. 22 Commentary “Bush or Kerry” with great interest. In “The Case for Bush,” the writer claims “Only one man has a record to run on — George Bush.” Yet the article contained 14 references to John Kerry and only four references to G.W. Bush. In “The Case for Kerry,” I counted 24 references to Kerry and zero to Bush. It’s obvious which party is running an “attack” campaign.”

So one writer is represenative of the entire Bush Campaign. I’d challenge Ms. Yule or any Kerry supporter to tell us the key planks of Mr. Kerry’s campaign? What issues does he advocate? There’s no record for him to run on.

Leo Faddis blames the following on George W. Bush:

In the past three-and-a-half years, credit card debt is up 55 percent, foreclosures are up 45 percent, and bankruptcies are up 35 percent.

Now, these economic facts have more to do with normal private life and a lack of discipline in personal spending habits, and financial preparation, not with the President of the United States.
Also, Credit Card debt increasing might have something to do with Alan Greenspan. 0% intro. rates used to be unheard but are now a fact of life for Credit Cards.

Nine million people have lost their employer-provided health insurance. And, we are down about a million and a half jobs.

This has to do with the rising cost of health insurance, which is caused by rising malpractice suits and government over-regulation. Will Trial Lawyer Sen. and Kerry Runningmate John Edwards (D-NC) do anything about that?

Terrorist attacks reached a 20-year high in 2003, and there have been more al-Qaida attacks since 9/11 than in all the time before.

That would be because September 11th was a terrorist declaration of war on us. The Bush Administration has prevented numerous attacks. Mr. Faddis rather than blaming the terrorists puts the onus on Mr. Bush, whose justice department has prevented numerous attacks.

….These National Guard troops are not guarding our nation, and they are not fighting the terrorists that attacked our nation.

Again, the left misses the poing. We are no longer taking a reactive stance towards Terrorism. As President Bush said in his Interview with Rush Limbaugh, “You see, one of the lessons of September the 11th is that we gotta deal with threats before they fully materialize…”

What this mean is rather than waiting for Iraq to sell biological weapons to terrorists, we took out their terrorist friendly regime.

And, by the way, have they found anyone who saw George on duty while he is accused of being AWOL from the Guard? Don’t think so. He just keeps telling us that he got an honorable discharge, so he must have been there.

Thanks for reminding us which side of the aisle first brought up Vietnam service as an issue in this campaign.

William Rainford wrote the following,

On any given day, I read editorial letters of hate and intolerance, exclusionism and oppression. Whether it be homophobia, xenophobia, sexism, or racism, the toxic poison spewed in these letters is hurtful, not only to the targets of such letters, but also to society in general and the letter-writer in particular.

I am encouraged by one thing. I know history. Perseverance for social justice trumps hatred every time.

Those who would have society controlled by a dominant few closed-minded, narrowly focused individuals should know — every time you push for your hateful vision of the world, we will push back for a world where all are equal, all are free. Martin Luther King Jr. said it best: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

—I wonder at someone who views politically free speech as an injustice that must be righted and stopped. I believe Castro and Stalin might agree.
