The Far Left Doesn’t Love Ron Paul

Posted by Adam Graham in : Presidential Race 2008

Before, I begin, let me note I’m not a Ron Paul supporter.

It’s a frequent meme on conservative blogs that the left really drives Ron Paul’s support. A post from Talk Left indicates, “Not really.”

He’s a dangerous nut. He only wants to end the war on drugs on a federal level. His endorsement of a Tancredo-type amendment to the Constitution to deny citizenship of children born in this country to the undocumented is appalling.

The second complaint re: the anchor babies is an interesting point. I fail to see how it was within the intent of the 14th Amendment to create the situation where people in the country illegally would give birth to US Citizens. The full thrust of the 14th Amendment was the guarantee of equality under the law for the recently freed slaves, not for people who were violating the law of the land 140 years later. To basically grant citizenship because your parents broke the law seems backwords to seem the least.

However, the first point is classic. The first problem is that Ron Paul favors ending the war on drugs at the federal level. What’s wrong with Ron Paul according to liberals is that he will not tell Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and every other state in the Union that Heroine, Meth, and Cocaine can be legally sold like cigarettes and alcohol.

Of course, other than perhaps Dennis Kucinich, no major presidential candidate would take such action. And no presidential candidate in his right mind would propose it. But that’s the demands of the far left.

What Paul is proposing is a detente in the culture war. Liberal states have it their way, conservative states have it theirs. His biggest problem? Far left liberals don’t really like federalism. They want federally opposed abortion-on-demand, same sex marriage, and on the fringes, yes, even federally imposed drug legalization in all 50 states.  Because of that attitude, many conservative bloggers have got it wrong.

Yes, Ron Paul is admired in some liberal circles for his opposition to the war, but ultimately any love for “freedom” is more than balanced out by a desire for an exer-expanding state and judicial lapdogs that fetch new constituional rights out of thin air.

Re: “anchor babies” — do you have citizenship papers for all of your ancestors? How do we know if all of your ancestors had passed the Citizenship test and become citizens before giving birth? If not, how do you know that you’re a citizen under your proposed new rules?

Seriously, if you’re trying to give the Reconstruction Congresses the same stamp of infallibility of the Founding Fathers, that’s going a little bit too far IMO. The words of the 14th Amendment are clear — those born on U.S. soil, other than children of those with diplomatic immunity, are citizens of the United States; any change would require an Amendment. (And not even Bill Sali agrees with your sentiment.)

There does seem like something wrong with the idea of sending a child back to a third world country they have no memory of and in fact has never been to. I think Adam’s coming at it from a different perspective: lawbreakers should not be permitted to break the law simply because they happened to give birth here, they have to go back, period. And he hates the idea of separating families even more than he does the former.

And yeah, it’d take a constitutional amendment. But that was indicated in Adam’s post.

Bubbs, I would never propose making it retroactive. However, the 14th Amendment is being used in a way that it was never intended and a way I would argue is harmful to our society when we have people coming here with the intent of having kids so they can remain in the country illegally. This was certainly not the intent of the 14th Amendment, and is a legitimate issue to raise.

these are such small arguments you have to look at the greater cause
