He was not my 1st choice for party chairman, but he is now the GOP chairman. I wish him all the best. It is remarkable that we now have the first African American RNC Chairman. What a country.

He is for Roe v. Wade, for affirmative action, against the death penalty, against standardized testing in schools, loves federally protected land for the environment’s sake, and is for assault weapon bans.
He’s pretty much a horrible person to represent our party. His skin color doesn’t enter into it.

Well, Chairman Steele’s defenders would say, “He said that stuff to win a U.S. Senate seat in Maryland not Idaho, but it’s not what he really believes.” (though I’m not sure how a lack of political and moral courage qualifies one to be chairman.) In addition, the job of the chairman isn’t to write the platform, it’s much more of a techncratic job concerned with building infrastructure. The reason I didn’t want Steele was because he had problems with being trusted by conservatives and believe me if he misuses his position to, in some way, move the party left, I’ll scream bloody murder. However, Ken Blackwell, who was my favorite for Chairman endorsed Steele over Katon Dawson and Saul Anuzis. This ultimately puts the decision on his head because had Blackwell endorsed Katon Dawson, this election goes another direction. I’m sure Blackwell got assurances from Steele before giving the endorsement. It’s also on our State Chairman, Norm Semanko. Norm supported Steele and knows him. I don’t think Norm would sell us up the river. I certainly don’t think he’d vote for Steele if he thought he’d make our party anti-gun or back away from the pro-life platform. At some point, we either trust the people we elect to make the decisions, or if we can’t trust them, why are we bothering to elect them.
Part of being in a political party is that sometimes you’re guy doesn’t get it and if there’s room to hope things work out, you do your best to be supporitive of the person who wins. I will not support Mitt Romney in the primaries for President in 2012 because he’s got a lot of the same problems as Steele in terms of what he said and I just don’t trust he’s being sincere now. But if he does get the nomination, I’ll hope that he’s telling the truth now and was being an absolute liar to the people of Massachusetts. Now, that we’d have a Presidential candidate who would perpetrate a fraud on millions of people is another problem entirely.
Of course, this doesn’t mean blindly following Steele. “Trust but verify” is the watchword. If he makes attempts to move the party left, believe me, I’ll pounce on it. And just in case, I don’t plan on giving money to RNC, but am far more open to the NRSC and the NRCC which both have unapologietic conservatives running them.
