The Weekend Response: American Communists

Posted by Adam Graham in : Iraq War

Drew Ashbury writes a truly original letter to the editor. He begins by assailing neo-conservatives as communists and then mentions that the war is called a liberation. He then writes:

If I recall my history right, didn’t the former Soviet Union invade Eastern Europe under the pretense of “liberation?”

-And then they set up puppet governments. Look, the new Iraqi government was majority Sikh in free elections. That’s the difference between us and the Soviets. It’s the same thing that made us different from them back in the 1940s. We allow people to set up their own governments and then we back off.

And in that respect what gives one nation the right to force its ideals on another? By what authority gives us the right to tell people of another nation how to run their own lives?

–First of all, there were people in Iraq who wanted Saddam gone and there are people who voted in numbers for their own freedom. I may not think that entering Iraq was the best thing to do but to villify our troops and our nation is unfair.
