The Crazy “Pro-Choice Parents” Blog Round-Up
Posted by Adam Graham in : AbortionCross-posted from WhereIStand
Here’s an interesting story out of the Northeast that’s created some buzz in the blogosphere:
After disclosing to her parents that she was pregnant, a 19-year-old Maine girl was allegedly bound with rope and duct tape by the parents, who then allegedly attempted to drive the girl to an abortion clinic in New York on Friday for an emergency abortion, police said.
Now, I don’t think anyone on WhereIStand would argue that this was the right thing to do. Let’s go through some of the blogospheric reaction via Technorati’s top ten results:
Mystick Wicks pagan online community condemned it though one commenter felt that the child’s doomed due to genetics and a brief debate ensued on that. (How did a Message Board get into Technorati, I’ll never know.)
Live Journaler JWL39 highlights that according to the daughter she was told she had “no choice” but to get an abortion by her parents.
I love Rhymes with Right but this isn’t the face of pro-choice America. There’ve been a lot of posts about this story on abortion, but as much as I’ll call the pro-abortion movement on the carpet, there’s nothing to establish any type of link. Did they give money to the pro-abortion movement? Did they volunteer for Planned Parenthood? Or where they just sleezeballs who kidnapped their daughter to kill their grandchild?
A Pro-Choice blogger condemns it while extolling the virtues of all other things abortion.
Catholic Fire has the best point so far:
Although this sounds pretty outrageous, it is not at all unusual for parents, relatives, boyfriends, child molesters, and rapists to force the pregnant mother to have an abortion, which is truly a crime in more ways than one.
Forced, or at the very least coerced, abortion is quite common. This, rather than all people who are pro-choice favoring forced abortion, seems far more reasonable and where my general experience leads as well.
Parents Behaving Badly condemns this noting that you usually hear of conservative parents stopping their daughters from having an abortion, but doesn’t link to any stories of conservatives locking 19 year old daughters in the basement.
UPDATE
The blogmaster at Parents Behaving Badly showed true class by pulling the assertion. Good man and a rare blogger. My hat’s off to him.
V & S argues that if the opposite happened there’d be a lot more coverage and he’s probably right.
The Feminist for Life Live Journal group posts the story only commenting how horrific it is, which is perhaps the most natural reaction rather than analyzing two psychos to death.
The Florida Masochist names the parents knuckleheads of the day and I think they earned the award.
Liberty Blog condemns it.
Finally, one other thought that backs up the point made by Catholic Fire by a poster another message board that snuck onto Technorati:
I am the product of a crisis pregnancy. My late Grandmother (d. 2002) almost made my Mom, then 17, have an abortion with me in 1971. But because she was in her second trimester, it was not allowable – and before Roe Vs. Wade, etc. My Grandma also tried to have my Mother sent to Missouri to have me put up for adoption once born. My Father’s family fought this tooth and nail.
To summarize, ten blogs on different sides of the issue and no one thought this was cool.
The take away lesson: not every abortion is a matter of the woman’s choice. Very often there’s a relative, boyfriend, etc. applying pressure. Most simply don’t go as far as the Kampfs did.
