The Spin of the Yak
Posted by Adam Graham in : PoliticsThe Yak brings us the story of a survey that “claims to have followed 95 children over a 20 year period in an attempt to determine a connection between “childhood personality types” and adult political orientation.”
The conclusion:
Remember the whiny, insecure kid in nursery school, the one who always thought everyone was out to get him, and was always running to the teacher with complaints? Chances are he grew up to be a conservative.
Now, a study with 95 kids means next to nothing. Its an incredibly small sample size. The Yak however came up with the best spin on the results:
If the “insecure whining tattletales” grew up to be Conservatives….
The sand-throwing, lunch-money-stealing bullies, the clique-leaders who made fun of kids who looked different, had special needs or came from poor families and the kids who broke every rule in the book as long as the teacher wasn’t looking – all grew up to be Liberals.
The point is valid, but that’s the best example I’ve seen of turning a liberal spin on its head.

A survey done by The University of California at Berkeley . (cue the laugh track) But then again maybe it makes sense for Republicans to cry as babies and Democrats to whine as adults.
Check this out from the findings.
“Kids who turned into bleeding hearts were “self-reliant, energetic and resilient,” as tykes, according to the study.
The conservative kids felt easily victimized, “indecisive, fearful, rigid, inhibited, and relatively over-controlled and vulnerable,” according to the 16-page document published in the Journal of Research in Personality”
So this study claims that kids who are confident and self-reliant grow up to favor welfare and other social welfare programs and safety nets while the fearful and vulnerable kids grow up to favor more self-reliance and less government intervention? Doesn’t make sense.
