    In fairness, that Smith quote was taken out of context, and Smith is outraged by it. And in fact, it’s very important to recognize that most of the really dangerous, evil people in the world think they are doing good. Even Bin Ladin probably starts his day thanking Allah for the blessed slaughter of the infidels, as opposed to twirling his mustache and laughing uproariously about how great it is to be so evil. The reason it’s important to recognize this is because evil isn’t always so easy to spot. It’s the mistaken idea that having ostensibly good intentions means you can’t be evil that accounts for a lot of the moral equivalence nonsense we see so much of. Just because someone can justify their actions to themselves doesn’t mean they’re justified.
