Why You Can’t Trust the Left on Religious Freedom

Posted by Adam Graham in : Christianity

Courtesy of Persecution Blog and LaShawn Barber about a man in Afghanistan who faces execution for converting to Christianity:

Islamic sharia law proposes the death sentence for Muslims who abandon the religion. Afghanistan’s new constitution says “no law can be contrary to the sacred religion of Islam.”

He would be charged with abandoning Islam, Mr Mawlavizada said.

“The prosecutor says he should be executed on the basis of the constitution,” Mr Mawlavizada said, who added that Mr Rahman could come back to Islam…”If he does not … he will be punished,” he said.

Its a dire situation worthy of prayer and soon action. Americans spilt a lot of blood in Afghanistan and hopefully a call from the American people will lead to some type of clemency. Your prayers are greatly appreciated.

Meanwhile, Russ illustrates why liberals can’t be trusted to preserve freedom of religion for those who disagree with their viewpoints. Russ writes:

Hell, few Americans are familiar with democracy and toleration! I wonder how Dominic feels about gay marriage or women’s reproductive freedom?

Because denying a woman’s right to have a doctor insert scissors into the base of the skull of her eight month old fetus or refusing to let homosexuals marry is the same as EXECUTING people for disbelieving in Islam.

The execution would violate the UN Declaration of Human Rights which is recognized in Afghanistan’s Consitutiton. Of this Russ writes:

Would that be that horrible document of secular humanism, the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as Adam is always referring to in his Ten Commandments arguements?

The UN Declaration is a joke as illustrated by the story. Something that grants rights to personality development and participation in the arts as foundation to fundamental rights is going to be ignored.

Russ concludes:

Well, there you have it, Christians. Live by the Crusade, die by the Crusade.

Wow, and like I said, that’s why you can’t trust the left with religious liberty. First of all, do I think Russ would ever do violence against religious people? No. But what it shows is that Russ takes a flippant attitude towards it.

Lets imagine some scenarios. Lets say:

1) All Evangelical Christians were rounded up and deported from the State of New York:

Predicted Liberal Reaction: Shows them for not supporting gay marriage.

2) Muslims in Detroit kill hundreds of Christians and burn dozens of churches to the ground:

Predicted Reaction: Well, when you don’t clearly support the Seperation of Church and State, that happens.

3) Christians Put in Re-Education Camp in California

Predicted Reaction: Call it Reparitive Theory for anti-gay bigots

If Russ reacts like this to the persecution of foreigners, why would he react any differently to the persecution of American Christians? Any persecution is not just facilitated by bloodthirsty regimes, but those who couldn’t care less about what those regimes are doing.

A lot of wild speculation and reaching for your conclusion. What is your definition of persecution? Persecution is persistent mistreatment of an individual or group by another group. Is is near impossible for a majority religion to be persecuted. My guess is when Christians complain of persecution in the US they are more likely complaining about losing their special status within the overall culture – like the debates over the 10 Commandments in court houses and “under God” in the pledge. It is simply a false complaint.

Equating real persecution like the article at the begining of your post noted, and the political debate over religion having a special status in the US government is comparing apples and oranges.

It doesn’t follow that “you can’t trust the left with religious liberty” since the situations aren’t the same.

In the US, the persecution clearly is going against non-Christians and non-believers as Christians are struggling in their death grasp as the “chosen people” of this country deserving of special status and special rights.

David Limbaugh wrote a whole book on this. You have Christians being told to cover crosses on their persons at the threat of being fired. My point is that simply put you can’t trust those who say, “Trust us. We won’t allow infringements on your religious liberty” to actually fight to protect religious liberty when the rubber meets the road.

Looks like a bunch or straw men to me. How about instead of imagining what the left would do, you ask the left. That’s the honest thing to do.

I don’t have to ask them. Look at Russ’ reaction to the Afghanistan thing. It SAYS it all.
