Yachety Yak, Here’s The Best Links to The Yak

Posted by Adam Graham in : Blogging

Our friend, Random Yak has been like butter (Yakbutter, I guess) recently, as he’s on a roll.

First, Yak wrote about his son’s schools “read and relax day”. Many students went to school in their pajamas:

The first one happened back in September or October, and I remember thinking “that’s sort of interesting – we didn’t have days like that when I was in school.” Interesting, that is, until I discovered that “read and relax” day means doing nothing but reading and relaxing. To make matters worse, the school advocated bringing pillows and sleeping bags to campus and wearing pajamas.

It’s a classroom, Jim, not a slumber party! (Statistically, 38% of you got that, all over the age of 30).

I learned about the slumber party atmosphere when Yak the Younger timidly approached me with a flyer describing the (cough) event and asked whether he HAD to wear his pajamas. I’ve never seen the child as relieved as he was when I stated, “Not only don’t you have to – you’re not permitted to.”

Relief washed over his ten year-old face as he responded, “Thank you. Pajamas are for home – not school.”

Yak’s story reminds me of one that was told me about California Education while I was running for State House in Idaho. This kid brought home a book, telling a revised story of the ants and the grasshopper (which was meant to tell the value of hard work, as the grasshopper ends up without food by being lazy while the ants are working and preparing for Winter.) In this story, the wastrel character is told to go knock on a tree, and a certain rich Uncle would pour out nuts for free. The parent promptly yanked the kid from the public school.

The Yak then takes on Howard Dean. No contest there, folks.

Finally, making funny comments on headlines is popular in the blogospher but the Yak came up with the best EVER!

Bush Heads for Bin Laden Country (Takes Cheney Along In Case They Spot One)

I was laughing for 2 minutes. Well done!

Thanks, Adam – I confess I’ve been effectively AWOL for a couple of days – blogging a couple of things every now and again but largely out of commission – but I’m throwing up the “trackbacks for the tech challenged” in the posts now.
