Democratic Activist Charles Greeley of Des Moines, Iowa is a follower of the late Senator Paul Wellstone. He believes the Democrats should nominate Wellstone.
"Paul stood for progressivism. He'd be an articulate spokesman for our party, and far better than any of his competition." Greeley is promoting the Wellstone campaign in Iowa.
A member of Fmr. Governor, Country Doctor, and all-around great American Howard Dean (D-VT) sees a slight problem with this. "I don't think Americans will elect a dead candidate." said Shelley Hopkins of the Dean Campaign.
The words from the front-running campaign of a man who walked on water while being a brave moderate who outraged liberals by vetoing the bill which would have had Vermont declare itself part of Cuba does not phase Greeley.
"It's bigotry, pure and simple," said Greeley. "That's why Dean's not a liberal. He doesn't embrace the whole of humanity. No condition, including death precludes you from fulfilling your dreams." Greeley points to the re-election of dead Rep. Patsy Mink (D-Ha) last year. Greeley proposes that Wellstone run with Fmr. Governor Mel Carnahan who came back to defeat John Ashcroft after he died.
"People everywhere are looking for something new. " Greeley continued. "The question we have to ask ourselves is not why we should elect a dead President. The question is why not elect a dead president? What deep-seated prejudice causes us to think that people who are alive are more qualified for office. It's a sickness in society."
